On Wednesday we went to S.W.O.R.D.--a Bible Memory class and Bible Study for children that is held most weeks at my family's church in Huntington Beach. We were dropping off my sister Rebecca there (she had been staying with us for a few days), as she is one of the teachers for the 2-5 year old class. Though Michael is not 2 yet, the leaders said it'd be fine if he came along. :) At first the children in his class played with playdough, and Michael loved it! The little girl he was sitting next to kind of adopted him, and the two of them enjoyed playing together. All the classes then came together for "large assembly", where some of the leaders did a skit, then my brother Andrew told the story of John Bunyan. It was such a fun experience for Michael! He loves being with other little children!
Michael has had a recent fascination with wearing our shoes. It started with Tom's shoes, but he also likes to try mine. He usually sticks his feet in them backwards, and tries to walk that way. Daddy's shoes are especially big and awkward, but he somehow manages to scoot along a little before he falls down. We get such a laugh out of his attempts to be a "big boy"! :)
Michael loves soft things--from afghans to a piece of fuzz found on the carpet. When he feels something soft, he loves to suck on his thumb. He loves his little sister very much, and to our great amusement, when he feels her skin, he often puts his thumb in his mouth, as a sign that she is very soft. He likes to squeeze her chubby little thighs, and she loves the attention! During times when she is crabby and crying, he likes to run and bring her toys. If she is in her bouncer seat he will set his gifts in her lap, and once when she was in her porta-crib, he threw toys up and over the sides for her. :) Among the items he threw to her was a piece of paper that he had found and adopted that day, and he also sacrificed one of his very favorite things--his dearly beloved afghan. He bounces her bouncer, pushes her in the swing, and loves to hover near her. Of course, at this age he can't be totally depended on for safe activities, :) partly because he's still not extremely coordinated, and sometimes the toys don't always go in her lap like they were supposed to. :) Wherever the toys end up, though, Bethany greatly appreciates all of his love, and he is one of her very favorite people. He was the first one who made her laugh, and no one can cheer her up quite like he can. It warms our hearts to see how they love each other. :)
Last Saturday we visited my parents' house. With 2 aunts, 6 uncles, and 2 grandparents, Michael and Bethany never have a dull moment! Michael loves to play with his three youngest uncles, who aren't that much bigger than him. Bethany really likes being held, and she hardly ever has to be set down over there! What delight for our little cuddle-bug! When Michael went outside during the hot part of the day, his Aunt Rebecca followed him around covering him with an umbrella lest he get too much sun (talk about being treated like royalty!). In the late afternoon some of us went to the park, and had a lot of fun showing Michael around that playground. He absolutely loved the slides, and squealed with delight as he slid down again and again! He usually had at least one willing person to catch him at the bottom, too. The whole time we were at my parents' house, he played practically non-stop with no nap. Needless to say, he slept almost the whole way home, without being wakened by some earth-shaking "music" in the car next to us as we were getting gas, or the extremely noisy carwash we went through. What a fun day! :)
