Michael is two years old today!! That is hard to believe! He was born at 10:00 AM, so this morning we took a picture of him at that time. He was just finishing up his breakfast, which was extra messy because he got frozen blueberries on his cereal--one of his very favorite foods. :)
After breakfast he opened his present from us--a wooden train track. He loved playing with it, and so did Daddy. ;) We're planning on letting Michael open one more present later today--a present sent from Uncle Ed and Aunt Susan.
Michael is fighting a cold, so we are saving the birthday dessert for another day. We will, however, have his favorite dinner tonight--homemade macaroni and cheese. That was my favorite food for many years, too--I wonder if we could be related? :)
Happy birthday, Michael!
Ahh…breakfast at the Johnson household. Just the words are enough to exhaust me! For some reason, breakfast is the most chaotic and crazy meal of the day. Tom is often running out the door to go to work when the children and I eat. I put both of them in their highchairs, which have to be half way across the room from each other because of the cramped design of the kitchen. Almost as soon as I put them in their chairs, the howling begins. I cannot tell you how deafening it is sometimes! I still feed Michael his breakfast (because if I don’t, it will not get eaten), and feed Bethany, too. “Little Bean” wants sustenance immediately, also, so feeding all three…(ahem) I mean four….of us can be quite a project! ;) If I’m feeding Michael, Bethany’s often screaming, and if I’m feeding Bethany, then Michael will probably be howling. I try to scoop my breakfast (and “Little Bean’s” breakfast) in my mouth whenever I get a chance! This morning it was especially deafening in the kitchen, and I just couldn’t seem to make Michael and Bethany happy at once. I finally solved the problem and delighted them by singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” as lustily as I possibly could! It was complete with crazy hand motions, some dramatic waving of the arms...and marching, of course. That quieted them down enough for me to think, and I quickly scooped some bites in their mouths while still putting on my energetic show. No one ever told me that breakfast time would be such a workout, with running between highchairs, marching around, etc.! I was also never informed that drama skills are very helpful in mothering! Thankfully, babies aren’t picky, and the more you make a fool of yourself, the more they like it! Other times, spinning around the room with a towel over my face (part of a unique game of peek-a-boo that we made up) is helpful during mealtimes. I think it's time for everyone to go back to bed now! :)
(And for those of you who are wondering--yes, I have mixed up their food before, and found myself spooning Bethany's cereal into Michael's mouth! Thankfully, I haven't accidentally fed myself any baby food yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if I do one of these days!)
Last Saturday we went to my family's house for their annual "spring egg hunt". They usually try to do it on the first day of spring, but they delayed a couple of days so that we could celebrate with them. They had dyed 5 dozen hard boiled eggs the day before, and had 171 plastic eggs all stuffed and ready to hide! We hid the plastic eggs in the backyard, and the dyed eggs in the house. There were five "egg-hunters"--my three youngest brothers, Paul, Philip, and Timmy, plus Michael and Bethany. Michael and his uncles had to stay in the playroom while the eggs were being hidden, but we let Bethany stay with us during that time, thinking that she didn't understand what was going on anyway. However, she caught on to more than we thought she would, because while we were still hiding them, she found a yellow hard boiled one in the house and started sucking on it! I guess she should have been shut up in the playroom, too! :) When we let the children out to find the eggs, they ran (or crawled!) in all directions! Michael and Bethany loved this adventure! Since Michael had already gone on an egg hunt this year with Grandpa and Grammy Johnson, he knew exactly what to do. However, he kept on putting his eggs in with his Uncle Paul's collection, instead of his! Bethany loved finding the eggs, playing with the fake green grass in her basket, and crawling around on the grass. Welcome springtime! :)
Last Saturday my dad, mom, and sisters came over to our house for a day of sewing (well, actually, my dad didn't sew... :)). We tackled the huge project of making curtains and shelf covers for the den. Because our den was a two car garage converted to a room, we don't have a garage--just a carport. Because of our lack of garage, we set up some shelves in the den for storage. They don't look very homey, though, so I really wanted to cover them. My very creative mother helped me figure out how we could make drapes to hide them. Along with the drapes for the shelves, we also worked on making valances for the windows in the room with the same fabric. Our project was bigger than we had pictured, so we didn't finish it that day. Hopefully we will be able to finish up this Saturday (tomorrow). We are bringing the project over to their house this time! When it is all done, I will try to take some pictures. I can hardly wait till these shelves are covered! Then no one will know when they are messy and disorganized. ;)
Bethany has been learning a lot of new things recently. She can stand up by herself for a couple of seconds, as well as walk while holding on to something or someone. She has also recently discovered how to play peek-a-boo, and say, "boo!" :) Her newest thing is waving "bye, bye" to Daddy when he goes to work. She has become so attached to him in the last couple of months, and gets so happy and excited when he gets home from work, just like the rest of us. :) She usually crawls to him as fast as she can when he steps in the door, and then she tries to climb up his pant legs until he picks her up. :) Once she's in his arms, she often acts like she hasn't seen him for 6 months, and buries her head in his shoulder while kicking her legs joyfully! :) All of Tom's love, patience, and cheerfulness have been paying off--he's a very loved and admired "Da-da"! :)
A very happy birthday to my brother Paul! :) I can't believe he is already 12!
