Daniel was taken to the NICU a few hours after he was born, due to severe jaundice. We were aware this would probably happen due to the pregnancy complications that we have been dealing with in the past few months. He is under double bili lights, and sometimes has an IV of fluid as well. He is currently in the high-intermediate risk zone of Hyperbilirubinemia, and can only occasionally leave the bili lights just to nurse (and some days he is not even allowed that much, depending on how he is doing).
I got to come home from the hospital yesterday, but we're not sure yet when Daniel will get to be discharged. It all depends on how his bili level is doing. His most recent level is 15.6, at approximately 72 hours old. We are praying it will not get much higher, because if it did, he would need an exchange blood transfusion. We are hoping and praying that the level will come down. We are anxious to bring him home! The children want to meet their new little brother!
We so appreciate all the prayers and love that has been poured out for us. We are so grateful to the Lord for blessing us with our dear little Daniel, and for giving us so many dear friends and family who care!
Yesterday was Bethany's birthday. Four years ago she was in the NICU as well! Yesterday while visiting Daniel, we bumped into our favorite nurse that took care of Bethany when she was hospitalized! We considered that a special gift from God, since this hospital is huge, and this nurse doesn't work very often! Some of the ladies who worked in the NICU heard that Bethany was turning four that day, and that she had been there herself four years earlier. They made her a special birthday card with Daniel's footprint on it, and sent home a little gift for her. :) It is special to look at Bethany now--completely healthy. The Lord gave us strength and grace to go through that trying time, and He is doing it again, just as He promised He would!
"How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy He gives;
But sweeter still, the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He lives!
Because He lives I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives all fear is gone!
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives."

Update: As of 6:00 p.m. tonight (4/12), Daniel's bilirubin was 16.9.
Daniel Scott Johnson was born this morning at 5:17 a.m. He was 8 lbs., 2 oz, and 19 inches long. We are thanking the Lord for this precious new little blessing!
I had a doctor appointment today, and we got some test results back. I'm going to the hospital tonight to be induced. We would appreciate prayer for a good labor and a healthy baby!
Today our precious firstborn turned five years old. What an unforgettable day it was when he was born! My life was changed forever, and I feel so blessed! Tom and I are so grateful to be Michael's parents. His sweet smile and caring nature are a delight to us!
Here are some fun facts about Michael:
Michael LOVES sheep. He has a collection of stuffed toy lambs, and likes to take all of them to bed with him. We think he would make a good shepherd boy! :)
Michael is overjoyed about getting a little brother! He seems very happy to give up the “only boy” position in our family! :)
One of Michael's favorite foods in all the world is peanut butter on bread. He prefers it plain on bread, without jam or anything else. When I asked him what he wanted for his birthday lunch, he insisted he wanted peanut butter on bread, despite my efforts to convince him to have something a little bit more special! :) A week or two ago when I was especially tired, I decided to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner (not a normal occurrence!). I was still feeling a bit ashamed to serve this, when Michael came to see what we were having and exclaimed with great delight, “We're having THOSE for dinner?!!” :) He sure isn't hard to please!
The other day, Michael got some scratches on his arm and wanted a band-aid. They were light scratches, and not something I would normally bandage up, so after comforting him, I took my time going to get a band-aid. After a little while of procrastinating, Michael came to me, sweetly requesting a band-aid, and told me that his sore was “getting moldy”. :)
Happy birthday, Michael! We sure love you!

Our little baby is supposed to be induced sometime in the next two weeks, due to some pregnancy complications. He has been doing fairly good, with some ups and downs. I am 37 weeks along today. This will be my first induced birth, and my first hospital birth as well. We are expecting our little son to need to stay in the hospital for awhile after he is born, though we are not sure how long. We appreciate all the loving prayers and concern for our little boy! We are looking forward to meeting him, Lord willing, in the next two weeks! :)
